Effect of Polyethylene Film Mulching in the Early Spring on the Growth and Flowering of Field - Planted Canna hybrida L.

Abstract
It has become considerably popular to grow Canra, which is the tropical bulbous ornamental, now these days. C. hybrida `American Red Cross¢¥ was planted on April 25 for an early spring planting in the field with and without polyethylene film or vinyl mulching (mulching). The trial tests have shown that sprouting from the ground takes place to days earlier with the mulching than without, and the subsequent vegetative growth was much more enhanced with the mulching than without. Days required for the first flowering were 15 days earlier with the mulching than without, and the number of flowers produced was more with than without. The number of lateral shoots produced and the number of flowers appeared on the shoots were also more with than without. Sixteen to eighteen % heavier top and bulb fresh weights were obtained with than without. Enhancement of these growth and flowering was not observed when bulb planting and the mulching are implemented on May 25, indicating the fact that the mulching effect is mainly due to an increase in soil temperature when it is not adequate enough far Canna to sprout and grow in the earlier stage of growth. ¢¥This obvious mulching effect is thought necessary to verify economical and other useful cultural feasibilities.
